Hello. I'm Beth Carroll. Welcome to New Hampshire Outlook. Imagine turning 76 years old and re-entering the work force. For some seniors, it's their choice - they enjoy staying busy and being part of their communities. For others, it's a neccesity. Poverty among seniors in New Hampshire is very real. While cost of living expenses rise, incomes usually do not. This has turned retirement, for some seniors, into a time of stress, uncertainty and need. More on what can be done to address that issue in a moment. But, first Outlook's Phil Vaughn has this "Seeing Seniors" report from Berlin. |

GREGORY/BERNADETTE Q When it comes to Poverty -- How much is hidden? **What are the ELDERLy going WITHOUT?? Q With Energy Costs ESCALATING this year -- will we see more seniors thrust into POVERTY?? Q Do the elderly make up a LARGE percentage of those seeking FUEL assistance??? Q Many seniors like Lionel and Olive.are struggling to pay RISING PROPERTY TAXES as their home-assessments have SOARED. Familiar scenario -- across the state??? Q Most seniors have houses paid off.but their heating, electric and water bills keep going up. Should SENIORS be thinking of taking EQUITY out of their houses. REVERSE mortgages. Q Can you share some PERSONAL STORIES.that might help us understand what choices elderly are facing?? Q How do you find those in need? and address it? Q Are we MEDICATING the elderly into poverty?? Q Health Insurance more costly for elderly. They require MORE of it, and more expensive treatment. Medical spending TWICE as much as someone 1/2 their age. Is that a major FACTOR when it comes to poverty status?? Q **Out-of-pocket expenses like prescription drugs -often not covered by insurance, rise dramatically with age -- nearly DOUBLING the poverty rate for those 75 years of age and older. Q What's WORKING to reduce the problem? Lionel and Olive spoke about people buying medicine over food. Gov fears paying fuel over food this winter??? Q What are the Implications of Senior Poverty -- for the community at large?? For the State?? Q Does the State's lack of an INCOME tax and a sales tax.mean FEWER assistance programs for low-income seniors????
